CCTV Surveillance cameras have become so commonplace that we normally don’t pay much attention to them. However the size, cost, and ease of use have made them invaluable tools in effective surveillance applications.
These kinds of cameras can range in size from mini “spy” cameras which can be tucked behind small objects or even inside books, etc. to full size commercial styles which can withstand harsh environments.
These are the kinds of cameras you see under a protective dome in department stores, etc. The sensitivity of these cameras covers a broad range depending upon their application. Some of them are almost high definition style if the application calls for type of resolution.
There are cameras which can operate very effectively in low light situations and even no light environments. Some cameras can be operated remotely whereby they can pan and zoom as required. These are especially useful for certain kinds of surveillance applications.
The cameras can transmit their signal either wirelessly primarily through a 2.4 mHz mode or they may use a hard wired connection. While a wireless option provides great flexibility in not having to route cables, it is much more limited in terms of the signal quality. Therefore it would not be advisable where a high quality image is required.
Most surveillance cameras can be connected to centralized control and receiver stations. In this way an operator can ensure that the cameras are properly focused and viewing what they need to do. Focusing can be manual or auto depending on the type of camera.
For the most part, these cameras are protected by either a molded plastic or sheet metal housing. For harsh environments, a water resistant molded case usually works out very well for these kinds of applications. This makes them ideal for outdoor applications.
Along with this type of moisture protection, the circuitry is generally heavy duty and can operate well over a broad temperature range. So adjustments may be necessary at the extreme ranges but for the most part the units operate well throughout.
For the cameras which require a cable connection, power is also typically supplied through a hard wired connection. For wireless units, an option is normally offered which enables the unit to operate via battery connection. This provides great flexibility when it comes to the placement of the cameras. However care must be taken to ensure that the batteries can be easily replaced as required.
