CCTV (or Closed Circuit TV) Systems consist of at least one video camera and a receiver designed to display the signal as well as record it in many cases. There are many types of CCTV systems designed for a wide variety of applications and budgets.
The cameras used in CCTV systems run the gamut in terms of size, features, and cost. Some customers want the smallest possible size in order to avoid detection. Others want rugged or waterproof construction, particularly for outdoor applications or in areas where vandalism are a concern.
The cameras can transmit the video signal either through a video cable or there are wireless transmitters available. Keep in mind that for wireless applications, the signal quality is limited by the bandwidth of the wireless transmission. So for applications which require a high quality signal, a video cable is advisable.
These systems can display the video signal on a monitor and many can also record the video for review at a later time. Many of the systems can date and time tag the signal for analysis of loss prevention or other monitoring requirements. There are some excellent DVR recorders which make it very easy to review activities and spot specific events. This is especially useful for security related incidents and can help law enforcement officials track offenders, etc.
CCTV systems have become much more commonplace in the home with the use of the so called Nanny cams. The systems can be connected to a computer and transmitted over the Internet. So it is now possible for anyone to view situations remotely through this type of connection.
In particular a Nanny cam can utilize a very small and unobtrusive camera to monitor the activities in a person’s home without the people there necessarily knowing that they are being watched. It can therefore be very helpful in ensuring that home employees are acting is a responsible and safe manner.
The ability to monitor activities remotely through an Internet connection is also a great tool for engineers and service personnel to check on remote locations and verify things are operating properly. It can save a great deal of time and money by not having to visit these remote sites as frequently.
These types of monitoring is also ideal for dangerous locations such as nuclear plants, chemical plants, etc. The cameras are designed to withstand harsh environments and provide relative safety for the people who need to monitor these areas.
